Okay, first, you're probably wondering what the Stylist's Secret Weapon is. It's not a personal relationship with Marc Jacobs, or a very large line of credit at Neiman Marcus. It's not even a long list of celebrity clients. While those are all good things for a stylist to have, there's one thing that's even more important; a good tailor. Unless you're handy with a needle and thread yourself, a good tailor is an indispensable part of any would-be Fashionista's style entourage. Surprised? Don't be. When it comes to Fashion, fit is everything. The reason those couture outfits start at $20,000 and go up from there? Partly, it's the luxurious fabrics high-end customers expect, but the real expense is the labor as each garment is literally "built" on the lucky customer's body. The result, a perfect, flawless fit. It takes hours and hours of work by a team of craftspeople to achieve this kind of perfection and it's the main reason those society ladies eat so much lettuce and so little else; gain an extra half-inch here or there and that flawlessly-tailored $20,000 Chanel dress is unwearable.
While most of us don't have twenty large lying around to drop on a single outfit (or the willpower to eat like a rabbit) we can still take a page from the Fashionista Handbook by recognizing that when it comes to looking truly great, fit is It. Good tailoring is what makes a simple, shapeless sheath from your local thrift, discount or vintage store look like it came from Balenciaga. And the best part is that joining the Fit Club is easier than you think; any local dry cleaner worth his or her spot remover either is a tailor or employs one.
But there's more: A good tailor can not only make a garment look great on you as it is, by employing some clever nips and tucks, she can transform your outfit!
What follows are three options starting with a simple, black, thrift shop sheath. At the very least, any dress like this will need some tailoring to fit perfectly. But rather than stopping there, I've done a few alterations taking things from simple to show-stopping! There's even one trick involving snaps that can take your dress from office proper to nightclub naughty and back again.
Total cost for this project can be anywhere from $20 up depending on what kind of deal you can get on your vintage dress, belts and how much you need to spend on tailoring. Total time to make can be as little as 20 minutes because there's only one part that requires some sewing. Or it may require no time if you take if to the tailor!
MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES
- VINTAGE BLACK SHEATH DRESS WITH BACK ZIP CLOSURE
- Shopping at Goodwill, flea markets or garage sales will get you the best price! But, you can go to a cool vintage store and spend a little more and they will do all the work! Look for a dress with a good thick fabric. Something like the black velvet I used- to give you extra support.
- STUDDED WAIST BELT - A good trick is buying belts in the kids department. I used two belts from the boys department at H&M. If you're larger, try to get studded belts from the men's department in a very small size (this can still be cheaper than shopping in the woman's department). Otherwise, there are also great belts at vintage stores but be sure to try them on!
INSTRUCTIONS
LOOK 1 "AS IS":
The dress "as is" with tailoring for fit. My equation for vintage is always $20 dress + $80 alterations = dress valued at 5 times what you spent! (And it looks like even more!).
SHOES: If your dress is black, consider punching it up with classic accessories in bright colors! Try some bright red shoes like these from Christian Louboutin.
LOOK 2 "SHORT & ROCK 'N ROLL":
You can shorten this dress by sewing snaps on the inside of the hem (you'll have two dresses in one!) Or if there's a basic black number in your closet you haven't worn in recent memory, why not do radical surgery and just cut and hem? (Figure out how short you want to go in a full-length mirror first.) The dress I'm using is very conservative and covers your chest/cleavage so you can go pretty short (if your dress has long sleeves you can go even shorter!) The rule with short dresses (provided you have great legs) is since you're baring lots of leg, keep your cleavage or arms under wraps or you run the risk of looking slutty, not sexy. Since the dress is pretty conservative, length notwithstanding, I "rocked it out" with a studded belt cinched at the waist. You can also wear it without a belt for a simpler look.
SHOES: Bring the Funk! This look calls for shoe-booties like these Louboutins in either black, red or fuchsia. Or, try something like these kick-a** ankle boots from Louboutin in either black or nude. They're totally hardcore and I'm obsessed with them. The nude boots look best with a bare leg. Pair the black with black hose or tights to make your legs look longer.
LOOK 3 "FRONT TO BACK PLUNGE":
Pretty. Daring. If you managed to get a dress with a nice long zipper in the back or buttons, simply slip the dress around and wear it front to back. If not, consult with your tailor and either create a new slit in the back or a new neckline in the front. If you're flat-chested, you can probably get away with minimal tailoring. Any cleavage though and this is job for the professionals! If your breasts are still "standing at attention," consider going bra-less, but if there's any sagging, opt for support and raise the plunge line to hide the undergarment.
SHOES: This is such a simple, sexy, yet elegant look that you can pretty much do any type of shoe or heel. But shoes like these strappy, chunky Louboutin peep toes or platforms add an extra edge to the outfit.

Sharon needs to get over Nick and leave him alone - Nick and Phylis have a great chemistry and Sharon is good for Jack and visa versa. Adam is beyond belief - let Victor and dumb Heather find out what a true "devil" he is. Mrs C and Murphy are absolutely the best - thanks for making them a very happy couple and someone who remains true to her friends (Amber and Kevin). It is a great story line to have Jill, Gloria, and Jeff BROKE - how perfect. Michael and Lauren are also great.
I LOOOOVE Y & R Styles. The guys and gals. Women in my area (Wisconsin) look for jewelry just like Jill Abbot's, we love Phylis' wardrobe but only a very hot model body like Phylis could ever pull these off. The younger girls are smoken hot and their fashions are so fun & elegant just like they are. Kevin is a major hottie....his clothes? (snore!) Daniel.....man, where did you find this guy?! He is beautiful and so is his taste in.......everything!
Have story lines with Ted Shackelford. Get rid of Ashlie, forever. Bring Murphy and Ms.C back together, maybe even a wedding for them. Chloe deserves happy times for a while. I know give her Jack. bring Adam and Victor back together. And Nick and Victoria need to like Adam
Please put Sharon and Nick back together!!! Let Sharon be pregnant from when they were trapped in the cabin. Then let Sharon heat up this relationship with her sexy self!

I'm so sick of the run-around with Nick and Sharon!! BE BACK TOGETHER ALREADY!!!!! Nick and Sharon were just dating when I started watching Y&R. I started watching when I was just a little bitty girl with my granny. I believe they should really be together. Cassie's death was just too much for them to bear, and they blamed each other instead of helping each other. And I think they realize that now. Phyllis......hopefully her time is UP!!!!!
i've been watching Y & R for about 15 years now, i want to see victor and nicki back together and nick and Sharon. Jack and Phyllis are scheming and vindictive alike and they deserve each other.
Heather should never agree to marry Adam i wish she would see him for the selfish person he is. Lilly need to accept Cane and Cloe are now a couple and move on. not to Billy but someone deserving of her. i would like to see Olivia back in the show, used to love her back in the days also bring her son Nathan back. Neil and karen has no chemistry on screen. Tyra is a better fit as Neil's love interest. Brad need to find someone who is hot and sassy to add some spice to his character.
I have been watching this show for decades. Victor is good with Ash, but will always end up back with Nikki. We are talking 20+ years here, it always goes back to the same thing.
Sharon... god can she be anymore boring and tired. Phyllis always brings an exciting storyline and adds excitement for Nick. Sharon was most interesting when she was cheating with Brad (yes lets not forget she is no saint). Jack is always best single and always best hating Victor.
Paul has spent so many years alone since Lauren Fenmore, he needs someone good for him.
Lily is good with cane and we all did want it to work, but Chloe is good with him too. Billy is just a jerk but peforms so well at getting everyone all riled up, so he is a keeper.
BY FAR THE BEST THING THAT Y&R WRITERS HAVE DONE was getting Daniel and Amber back together. They rock and are perfect for each other. After years of watching Amber on Bold & the Beautiful it is nice to finally see someoen treat her well and accept her just the way she is...Daniel is pretty hot too. And my god the look on Colleen's stupid face when she found out all the "sleeping with Daniel" in the world could not win over his heart was fantastic. The old Colleen and JT from 8 years ago was a lot better.
Love Eva from Americas Next Top Model, it is nice to see she can act alongside of Neal winters. Dru coming back would be exciting but also maybe starting a new romance with Dru's sister Olivia would be interesting as well. Seeing their chemistry together....Neal and Olivia used to date off camera years ago when he was married to Dru on the show.
I do not want to see Sharon and Nick together. They are too boring. I like Nick with Phyllis. Sharon can find someone else.
Forget Nikki and Victor....let's get the Nikki and Paul relationship going. The Lilly/Billy thing just doesn't work...put Chloe and Billy together and let Cane and Lilly get back together!
Victor and Ashley are good together. He'll never go back to Nikki, he blames her for Sabrina and his unborn daughter's death. It is so obvious Victor has no love for Nikki. Nikki needs to move on. She blundered with that loser, David Chow. I was glad when he exited the show but sorry to see Sabrina go, especially since Victor was really in love with her.
I want to see Nick and Phyllis break up. Then I want to see Nick and Sharon back together. I cannot stand Phyllis. She and Jack deserve each other. Both are despicable people, troublemakers.

Nick and Phyllis should stay together forever and get their own storyline without the miserably boring sharon. stop trying to go back 14 years ago, its just not happening anymore, if it ever did. We love nick and phyllis now and in the future.
Wow...what a wonderful show today!! I'm glad Phyllis saw Nick and Sharon kissing in Paris. She stole him from Sharon anyway. Phyllis and Jack belong together and I don't believe Summer is Nick's anyway, I think she is Jack's-(Can someone say DNA MIXUP?). What's up with Victor and Ashley being together again? It's obvious he's is just transferring his feelings for Sabrina to Ashley. Of course we all know that Kay is not dead. They only found one body in the car and we all know both Kay and Marge were in the car. Kay had to been thrown from the car and is wandering around. So we'll have to wait and see when she comes back. Real tired of Lily pondering after Cane. She told him to marry Chloe so she needs to move on. When is Drucilla coming back???/ Love Y & R!!!
Lilly is a glutton for punishment. Why does she keep putting herself in the position to see Cane and Chloe? There she is showing up at the Chancellor mansion with Billy - after hearing about Catherine's death. Then she looks surprised because Cane was holding Chloe. HELLO! did she forget that Chloe is Cane's wife.
Did she forget that she wanted Cane to marry Chloe because of the baby. Something she would not do herself when she found out she was pregnant with Cane's child. This is making no sense. Lilly needs to move on. What is she trying to prove?

I have been watching since the very first day of Y&R and I can't wait for the OLD VICTOR to come back! Jack has a big price to pay and it's time. I believe Nikki needs to learn to be alone for a little while just to get herself back together mentaly and over the past. Nick is his father's son 100% and Sharon - maybe another Nickki. Mrs. C will come back and it will hit Jill to the bone and she'll never get over it. As far as Cane and Adam - ever hear of Cane & Able? Only this time Cane needs to win his rightful wife. To bad Chole didn't have to have both brothers do a DNA. Oh well. I still like Y&R.
I am kinda curious what is going to happen when Phyllis finds Nick with Sharon in Paris. That is not going to go over very well. The fact that Chloe and cane our together i may not like but i do wish the best for Lilly. Lilly will be happy with someone someday. I just wish it was with Cane. They belong together. I just want to know whats going to happen with Mrs. C. She has been around for many years. Jack will get whats coming to him and he will loose his wife for the way he is behaving.
I just wanted to say that Y&R is the best soap out there. I just dont remember Marge. I can see Marge and Mrs. C teaming up. That would be cool.
My, my, my what a mess this day has brought to the people of GC. The story lines are getting very boring. Y&R has really been struggling over this past year. I'm getting a little tired of what Victor is doing. This is suppose to be sweeps month, I sure hope it picks up.
Oh I can see things turning in a direction for Katherine. No one knows she's back in touch with Marge. Marge is binging on booze and Mrs. C feels obligated to help her out. But I think with Katherine's memory failing her, the tables are going to turn on her and Marge is going to take on her (Mrs. C) life again. Maybe even put her in a rehab or mental institution. Why else after all these years did the writers bring her into the story lines again? And all this stuff going on with every one is getting rather ho-hum. I still maintain my feelings about Chloe and Billy...can't stand them and yes, they need to be together so Cane and Lily can get back together.

Now, now this is one time that I agree with Jill Abbott wholeheartly. Ms Chancellor does need to see a doctor. This is one time that Jill is being honest and she is right, and I am so glad that Jill walked into that room.And also this is one time that I am glad that Jack ran his mouth.Oh I am so glad that Jack gave Jill a hint so that she could watch over her mother and Gloria could not have Jacks fathers company. And I dear Gloria to play upon ms.c's illness.What a dirty thing for Gloria to do.I believe and I could be wrong but Gloria and Micheals father are still married to one another. She never divoiced him because he left Gloria and Micheal to be on the run.It appears that Adam is hanging out with all the people that hate Victor.Why did Adam go along with Jack on the scheme against his father. How could Adam sit there and Let Jack do that to his father. And he want to help Heather put is father in jail, what is this boy thinking? He will never get back into his fathers good graces.Or maybe just maybe Adam is working for Victor, all this is a plan.I think that there is going to be a Cane and Able.I think that with or without Jacks help Billy is going to hurt Cane in some kind of way.Now Billy knows the result of the DNA test.Billy is going to blow Chloes cover.
I knew and Colleen knew that she and Daniel was not going to last long, even though she was hoping for the best.I dont think that Nick and Phylis is going to last long because she is showing her evil ways and she is very jealous of Sharon. I think that Billy and Chloe make a perfect couple and Chloes plan is not going to last long because I believe that Billy is going to give Chloe up because he just cant seem to control himself and Chloe is running scare of Billy right now thats why she showed up at the dinner party playing sick. And maybe just maybe Billy wants Lily but Lily does not want Billy. Also I think that Lily should lay off looking for men on the internet.The police man the found Ana was a good looking guy and that is who Tyra should have made a play for. I do not trust Tyra and I would not be surprise if Tyra and Anas mother are not the same person.I cant remember Anas mothers name right now.And I do believe that Tyra has the hots for Neil just like Anas mother did. For some reason I do not trust Tyra.
Getting a bit interesting now. Jack is setting up JR for a big fall. But in the far end of it, Victor will really know that he had a big hand in this charade. I do feel for Victor though. He's taking Sabrinas death so badly. Do I think he murdered that lowlife? Well he could have and I think we are to think he did. And he could probably get away with it because he was consumed with grief. If Brad can get away with murder, then I am sure Victor can. But I would like to see him cut Nikki some slack. It wasn't Nikki who initally brought David to GC in the first place. He worked for that Global company. Sure later on she was duped by him as well as the rest. She was as much a victim as everyone else.
Cane might in time fall in love with Chloe/Kate, but will be shattered when he finds out he's NOT the father of the baby and that Billy is (don't you all think that's how it really is?). And I think that Billy is going after Lily now that Amber and Daniel have gotten back together. He hates Cane and he doesn't even know him. There was a time when Billy was a bad risk with his gambling, etc. That's one of the reasons he was gone. Why would anyone with half a brain put him as CEO? Cane is really getting the shaft every which way isn't he? But when he first came into town there was a bit of "hmmm..I wonder what he's up to" when he was on the phone with someone and he said "I'm in". I thought he was a scam/con person at first but now I just love him. Gloria is just pure hazel for what she's trying to do with Mrs.C. She gets Kevin to do alot of rotten things by cohersing and manipulating him. No wonder when he first came to town he was so messed up. I like him and Jana together. I have a feeling Gloworm and River will get back together. So much for Jeff. But he did take the cream, so we will more than likely see it surface with her name on it.
I heard Devon say to Lily something about talking to Olivia...I hope she comes back onto the show, along with Malcom (with the same people from before). I feel Dru will probably make a come back sooner or later. But I like Karen and Tyra is trying to weasel in. So if Dru does come back, she, Tyra and Karen will probably have a face off. Does anyone feel that Paul and Nikki might get together again? I am really glad that Brad hasn't been around for a bit...I really have gotten to the point of I'm tired of his character. And Colleen can go with him. She's boring and she went after Daniel even though she knew he still had feelings for Amber. So if she was hurt, it's her fault.
What's going on with Victor Newman? I thought he was too strong a man to be acting so weak. I know he has to grieve but this is getting to the point of insanity. I will be glad when he comes to his senses and come back to reality.
What Jack and Adam are planning for Victor is down right awful. This is going to get really ugly. I think if Sharon finds out what Jack is really up to he is going too lose her for good this time. I will be happy when all this deception is found out. I hope it will happen before year-end, I don't think I could stand the suspense. Heather look out, when it comes to light what Jack and Adam have planned for Victor and your unknowing part in it; you can kiss your job goodbye.
What's with Tyra and Ana. Why are they back? Why did Tyra pull Ana out of school, unless she secretly came back because she found out that Neil is running Newman and she wants to make a play for him. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that's her game plan.
If Chloe/Kate and Cane could have been together without Lilly ever being in the picture with Cane, maybe the relationship with Chloe/Kate and Cane could be tolerable. I think evenutally Cane will fall in love with Chloe. He seems to be warming up to her.
What I hope is that Lilly moves on and finds someone who will make her ten times happier than Cane ever could. I hope she deletes all of the feeling she has for Cane from her heart. It's enough, Lilly it's time to move on!
There is just to much suspence in the Y&R that I cannot stand it. It seems that all sorts of things are starting up but nothing seems to be comming to an end. The whole storyline is at a standstill and the suspence is killing me. I want to see something happen like Chloe getting caught in her own lies,Phyllis needs to get a grip because she is starting to act just like Jack, which is going to cause confusion between her and Nick with Nikki standing in the backgroung. Billy seen what Gloria was doing to ms chancellor and I dont think that Billy is going to let anything happen to his grandmother.And even though I did not care for them would someone please tell me what happened to Ana and Tyra? I dont think that Sharon is going to stay with Jack too much longer because all he wants to do is use and hurt people.I think that Adam is going down the wrong road by listening to Jack the same way that Nick did.Why cant Adam sit back and chill out so that everyone can see that there is some good in him.Heather is going to be the one to get hurt and daddy Paul is not going to be happy with that.
Now now I wish that Y&R will get on with it. There is just too much mystery in everything.I am waiting for some action to get started.Here goes my I hate Chloe campainge. Now dont Chloe see that nobody really gives a good hoot about her other than her mother.And if it werent for Billy she just would not be getting attention at all.So what she is having a Chancellor baby. I love Y&R. I have been watching it since the 80's and it keeps getting better and better. This magazine idea is genious. I cannot wait until the day Chloe's little secret comes out. It is so sad to see Lily and Cane be separated when they love each other so much. I am anticipating the day when everyone finds out. I also hope that Sharon minds her own business and stays away from Nick. I love the passion that Nick and Phyllis share.

Today's show was interesting. i sure hope Chloe still gets what is coming to her. Time will tell with that one. As far as Phyllis what she did to Sharon was very mean and cruel. One of these Sharon will be together. That was good of Nick to tell Sharon what his wife did. Jack has been lying to Sharon so much I cannot believe that Sharon hasn't left Jack yet. She needs to hurry up and leave Jack. Chloe is having Billy's baby. That is a good story line. I cant wait til the day comes when Billy starts causing problems for Chloe and Cane starts to figure it all out. Time will tell with that too. I think it was mean for Gloria to play a mean trick on Miss Chancelor that was messed up.
I can't believe Sabrina spooked the set of Y&R from the great beyond, in a white glowing gown no less!! How disappointing. !!!!!!!!!! Aren't there enough ghosts on this show????????

I'm usually not a big fan of bringing back ghosts, but I am still really disappointed about the choice to axe Sabrina. Were people blind to that inferno of passion that existed between Victor and Sabrina? Just look at the latest photos of her visit to him. I have never seen anything like it. Bring her back as often as possible. I still cannot believe the blunder in taking her out. She was a class act...a much needed character.

It seems like she has come to the realization that the ship called Cane has sailed and will never reach port again. I hope she finds happiness in whatever she chooses to do.
I don't know where to really begin here because there is so much to say. I just don't like repeating myself so I am not going to. I do agree one thing is for certain there is a really good story line with Billy and Chloe. Why else would Billy be coming back? There really could be a good chance Billy could be the father of Chloe's baby. I just hope Cane finds out sooner rather than later. Chloe paying off the nurse and doctor that is stupid. Does she not realize it will come back to bite her when Cane realize that she will be having the baby sooner then her pretend due date that was on the ultrasound. What comes around goes around. Chloe will get hers. As far as Michael goes I think it's a good idea that he is his dad's atty. That will work out. As far as Victor goes, yes I disagree with him shutting everyone out but he just lost his unborn child and wife. I personally don't know what that feels like. I do not wish that on anyone. But I do understand that he needs time to grieve that's for sure. I just think he needs to take care of his health at the same time. As far as Nick and Phyllis go I think they need to get divorced and Nick and Sharon need to get back together. Phyllis acts like she is so perfect and never does anything wrong. We all know different. Phyllis and Jack make a great couple for all their crap they do to people. They are a match made in heaven.
I cant stand Cloe or Adam, the new Billy and Eden. Give them the Boot and have Lilly and Cane back together just as Nick belongs with Sharon. And what is happening to Victor?? I dont like it.
I see the Y&R is moving right along. I have decided to keep watching regardless of the Chloe/Kate fiasco with Cane. What I will do is just switch the channel until that part is over then switch back again. I've been watching Y&R since it first started with Snapper when it first came on. I'm not going to let a few characters turn me off. However I will be very happy when Cane learns the truth if that ever happens.
I will also be happy when Victor Newman gets himself together and Jack gets what is coming to him. I also will include Adam in that as well. I look forward to the coming episodes.
Let Lily and Cane be happy TOGETHER!!!! They make a great couple and it is nice to see people who are in love rather than together to further themselves (Gloria)
I agree with Donna. I too after many years of watching Y&R am getting tired of watching. The storylines are getting very boring, especially with the unfair treat Lilly is getting on that show. I don't understand it.
Everything is turning which way and that on this show with the characters. So far from what I've seen, I don't like the new Billy/Liam or Eden characters. I stopped watching a soap on another station because they were doing the "supernatural" things like red eyes, raising off the bed, people dying and coming back to life, not once but several times. I've always thought Y&R was a little more "believeable" to a degree and kept my interest. But lately some of the story lines are way out there. I think Billy is going to go after Lily because he wants to "one up" his brother. I also think that Billy could be the father of Chloe's baby. She did have a fling with him, to my knowledge. As for the Nick/Phyllis/Jack/Sharon mess, I wish Nick/Phyllis would get a storyline that would heat up the screen again. I just don't see that happening for him and Sharon. Jack is getting on my nerves, telling Sharon not to do this and that, getting angry after all he's put HER through and she stood by him and now he's lying and doing something behind her back. Double standard. The writers put a few things in to keep you tuned in but as for myself, for the first time in 20 odd years, I'm getting tired of the boring shows. Like today's show. Hohum! Come on lets put some life back into the characters and storylines!
I have not been on here in awhile and thought I would add comments here. I cannot believe Chloe is still trying to pass off the baby as Caine's. Chloe still needs to realize that her paying off the doctor and nurse in todays show is going to come back and bite her in the butt. Then again I hope Cane fines out the truth before it's to late with Lilly. Lilly and Cane belong together. As far as Nick and Phyllis. I don't think their going to make it. Nick and Sharon belong together. They always have. Nick apparently has some sort of feelings for Sharon or Nick wouldn't have hidden Sharon's letter in his back pocket. Phllis and Jack belong together. All I know is one day Chloe we get what is coming to her. It will be just a matter of time.

I think Chloe and Cane would make a very passionate pair, even if he isn't her "baby's daddy". You, we, and I know, we wouldn't keep tuning in to Y/R if it was all "fluff and foo foo".
